We had this idea that he should pose naked on a bar stool with just a copy of the Financial Times. He didn’t think twice about doing it. He just stripped everything off in the club. Great to hear the story behind this pic. It’s his natural authority… People probably just think: “Okay, he gets naked. He will have good reason.”

I’ve read that note before but it’s always interesting to see it again.

It also always reminds me of the fact that he wouldn’t audition for the film of the Ian McEwan novel The Cement Garden’ while he was at Harrow because he didn’t want to take his clothes off.

‘I was really prudish at that age and thought, “F*** it, I don’t want to take my clothes off.” I was terrified, I didn’t want anyone seeing what I looked like,’ he says. ‘So I didn’t audition.’

Nice to see he got over that particular hang-up!

Benedict doesn’t like the term ‘cumberbitch’. OK. BUT it’s not our fault that every fucking single presenter and journalist reminds him about it. I’ll certainly not yell “Hey, Benedict, I’m a Cumberbitch!” if I ever meet him.

I’m OK with all other terms, but to me ‘Cumberbitch’ is something that makes us a real fandom. I don’t care about feminism that much, probably don’t care about it at all. But I like being a Cumberbitch. It’s just a nice pun. And it carries no negative meaning.

And again, I’m Russian. We like this very word. Maybe we get it not in same way that you do, dear English-speaking fandom.

Anyway, make love, not war. It doesn’t matter what we call ourselves - cumberbabes, cumberladies, cumberbelles - the thing is we love the most incredible actor in the world :)

P.S. and yeah, “cumberslaves”… ridiculous. We’ll do anything for the sake of Cumberlord! :D

I just meant to speak my truth and to share it with this fandom, not to tell you what to do with your beliefs.

For example: I’m italian and words like “cool” ( culo in italians means ass) are funnier than names like Benedict Cumberbatch ( that sounds sooo good in my language!) . Also, Benedict Cumberbatch is much easier to pronunce to me than common names like Arthur Smith.

So, I just wanted you to know that, in my opinion, everything is relative ( even words or concepts like “bitches” )and this is the reason why we should respect others for what they are. And sorry if I offended anyone; it was not my intention. ( And sorry for my bad English too. I love this language and I always try to do my best to use it properly)

I’ve already said a lot about this… I don’t want him to be uncomfortable, but I agree with the OP that changing the name just because Benedict doesn’t like it is the thing that will really set feminism back. But I’m okay with Cumbercollective, to a point, if it’s just a “collective” name and the fans can decide what they want to be called within the Cumbercollective, be it Cumberbitches, Cumberbabes, or Cumberflowers.

Now here’s an interesting thought. If Benedict was a female who we all admired and who asked us to change the name of the fanbase, then would it still be an issue? And if not why not?

I’m honestly intrigued to know why everyone thinks its a feminist issue. Why? Because we should be reclaiming the term bitch or because we shouldn’t be letting a man tell us what to do? And if that’s it, aren’t we guilty of being sexist ourselves?
